Wachau and Austria

Wachau – this famous 30 km section of the Danube between Melk and Krems – is one of the most beautiful river valleys worldwide. Wachau is a region well-known for its wines and tourism, just about 90 km from Vienna. The small winegrowers’ villages, situated right on the Danube’s bank, and the famous stone terraces where the wine is cultivated, are the characteristics of the scenery. The mild climate and the fertile loess soil are important conditions for wine growing.

Wachau’s history goes back many years – as is proven by the Venus of Willendorf, 25,000 years old. The Romans brought viniculture to Wachau, and even today archaeological finds can be discovered from that period. The earliest settlements were in the so-called “Thal Wachau” (first mentioned in 850), containing Weissenkirchen, Joching, Wösendorf and St. Michael. The important cultural monuments Stift (religious foundation) Melk and Stift Göttweig are the focal points of the World Cutural Heritage region Wachau. Wachau was awarded the title World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2000. The National Geographic Traveler Magazine elected Wachau the “Best Historic Place” in 2009.
